Shao Xiaocheng is the founder of the Chinese Embroidery Research Institute, an independent private institution dedicated to the study of embroidery art, operating outside of government jurisdiction.

邵晓琤,亦名邵晓铮、邵晓争。1957年出生。以个人的能力从事中华传统刺绣的研究、创作三十余年,涉及内容几乎涵盖了古今各门类、流派的刺绣,研究作品多被海内外藏家收藏;又将刺绣艺术引入高校,以“研究——实践——传承——保护”的学术经验,开辟了在创作中研究,在实践中挖掘,在传承中保护的有效途径,擅用历史史证结合传世实物,发挥个人技术专长,为研究挖掘历代精绝刺绣身体力行,更为捍卫传统刺绣非物质文化遗产的保护,做着坚持不懈的奉献,也给失传刺绣的恢复、发展、创新作出了可圈可点的成绩,综合常年研究内容,著《中国刺绣鉴赏宝典》《中国刺绣》(英文版)(CHINESE EMBROIDERY—AN ILLUSTRATED STITCH GUIDE)《图说刺绣艺术》《中国刺绣经典针法图解——跟着大师学刺绣》《中国刺绣经典针法图典——跟着大师学刺绣》等书,传播中华历代刺绣鉴赏知识,常将鉴赏刺绣的文章发表于收藏类杂志,深受读者信赖和欢迎。

Shao Xiaocheng, also known as Shao Xiaozheng, was born in 1957. For over three decades, Shao has dedicated herself to the study and creation of traditional Chinese embroidery, covering almost every category and school of the craft from ancient to modern times. Her research works have been collected by enthusiasts both domestically and internationally. Furthermore, Shao has introduced the art of embroidery into higher education, adopting a “research—practice—inheritance—protection” academic approach to forge an effective pathway for studying creative processes, exploring practices, and safeguarding traditions. By combining historical evidence with extant artifacts and leveraging her technical expertise, she has made significant contributions to the exploration and preservation of exquisite traditional embroidery across generations. Shao’s efforts in defending the intangible cultural heritage of traditional embroidery and in the restoration, development, and innovation of lost embroidery techniques are commendable. Her comprehensive research has resulted in publications such as “The Treasury of Chinese Embroidery Appreciation,” “Chinese Embroidery” (English edition) — “AN ILLUSTRATED STITCH GUIDE,” “An Illustrated Guide to the Art of Embroidery,” “Classic Chinese Embroidery Stitches: Learning from the Master,” and “The Dictionary of Classic Chinese Embroidery Stitches: Learning from the Master,” spreading knowledge of traditional Chinese embroidery appreciation and gaining trust and popularity among readers.

现为北京邵晓琤织绣研究院院长,中央民族大学民族学与社会学学院织绣研究生专业(在职)客座教授。中国高级工艺美术师,北京工艺美术学会会员,中国工艺美术学会会员,中国工艺美术协会高级会员;中国工艺美术学会刺绣专业委员会理事,联合国教科文国际民间艺术组织国际会员。

Currently, Shao serves as the director of the Beijing Shao Xiaocheng Embroidery Research Institute and a visiting professor for the embroidery graduate program (for working professionals) at the School of Ethnology and Sociology, Minzu University of China. She holds titles such as Senior Chinese Arts and Crafts Artist, member of the Beijing Arts and Crafts Association, member of the China Arts and Crafts Association, senior member of the China Arts and Crafts Association, director of the Embroidery Committee of the China Arts and Crafts Association, and international member of the UNESCO International Organization of Folk Art.

自幼受家庭熏陶,喜爱国画,擅画精绣、缂。因热爱传统刺绣、缂丝文化,且惋惜历史上众多名绣、名缂蒙尘、不为众所知、所鉴,遂下大毅力大恒心为重现中华精绝刺绣、缂丝风采而默默研究创作数十载。研究创作所涉及,上至春秋战国时期刺绣,下至民间民俗绣,为恢复宋绣、顾绣、鲁绣、宫廷刺绣、缂丝等欣赏绣潜心研究,为明辨明清名人名家刺绣悉心挖掘,为保护传统四大名绣苦心孤诣。她长以绣之灵逸表现画之神韵,以研究促创作,以创作验研究,挖掘恢复古代失传名绣,不满足停留在针法技巧融会贯通的工艺层面,更是在审美的层面总结继承并发展了刺绣艺术的表现力。

From a young age, influenced by her family, Shao developed a love for traditional Chinese painting and excelled in fine embroidery and kesi (cut silk). Driven by her passion for traditional embroidery and silk brocade, and lamenting the obscurity and underappreciation of many historic masterpieces, she has dedicated decades to painstakingly researching and creating works to revive the elegance of Chinese exquisite embroidery and silk brocade. Her research spans from the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period to folk and ethnic embroidery, focusing on the revival of Song, Gu, Lu embroideries, court embroideries, and kesi, diligently exploring the works of renowned artists and masters from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and zealously protecting the traditional “Four Famous Embroideries.” Shao has always sought to express the spiritual essence of painting through embroidery, pushing the boundaries of research and creation to uncover and restore ancient lost embroideries. Her work transcends mere technical mastery to embrace and develop the expressive power of embroidery art on an aesthetic level.

1985-1995:

 

Engaged in embroidery work in a family workshop.

1995:

Established Shanlin Traditional Embroidery Silk Art Studio.

Participated in the Fourth World Women’s Congress with the embroidery work “牵牛花” (Morning Glory) and received an award.

The embroidery work “牵牛花” went on a global tour.

1996:

Embroidered an artistic embroidery piece “簪花仕女图” (Lady with Hairpin Flowers), which was privately collected in Germany.

2000:

Participated in the 6th China Arts Festival Exhibition with the embroidery work “娄师白画牵牛花” (Morning Glory by Lou Shiba).

Recorded in the book “Chinese Contemporary Arts and Crafts Collection” published by Jiangsu Fine Arts Publishing House.

2002:

The embroidery work “花篮” (Flower Basket) was recorded in the book “CHINESE EMBROIDERY—AN ILLUSTRATED STITCH GUIDE.”

2003:

The Beijing-style embroidery piece “米芾书法砚山铭” (Calligraphy and Inkstone Inscription by Mi Fu) won the Bronze Award at the first Beijing Arts and Crafts Biennial Exhibition.

2000:

The artwork “对弈” (Chess Game) was recorded in the Beijing International Academic Symposium and Art Collection.

2006:

Embroidered the artwork “清明上河图·虹桥段” (Qingming Riverside Scene, Rainbow Bridge Section), which was privately collected in Taiwan.

2007:

Participated in the Embroidery Collection Seminar and delivered a speech.

The embroidery piece “茶花” (Tea Flowers) was recorded in the book “China Arts and Crafts Century New Works” published by the Chinese Arts and Crafts Society.

2008:

Invited by the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, USA, to participate in the “Exhibition of Ming Dynasty Court Art” and conducted embroidery experience activities to promote Chinese embroidery culture.

2009:

The embroidery work “梧桐绶带图” (Wutong Ribbon) participated in the “China Arts and Crafts Exhibition – Celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the People’s Republic of China” at the China National Art Museum.

Awarded the title of “Senior Arts and Crafts Master” by the Chinese Arts and Crafts Society.

2010:

Invited to the special exhibition of the 2nd World Youth Representatives Conference of UNESCO International Folk Art Organization, where the embroidery works “芙蓉鲤鱼” (Lotus Carp), “白度母” (White Tara), and “打籽绣” (Seed Stitch Embroidery) received awards for “Most Beautiful Cultural Heritage” and “Best Cultural Inheritance.”

Participated in the Beijing Arts and Crafts Society’s 5th China-Japan Art and Handicrafts Exchange Exhibition and delivered an academic lecture on “Innovative Embroidery in Modern and Contemporary Times.”

2012:

Invited to participate in the “Shanghai Cooperation Organization Member States Art Festival – Intangible Cultural Heritage and Traditional Culture Exhibition” cultural exchange event.

Participated in the first China Contemporary Arts and Crafts Biennial Exhibition at the China National Museum with the embroidery works “繁花凤舞” (Flourishing Flowers and Dancing Phoenix), “唐花图案” (Tang Dynasty Floral Pattern) in the Nasha Embroidery style, and “牧牛图” (Shepherd Boy) jointly embroidered by Shao Xiaocheng and Xiao Yao.

2014:

Participated in the second China Contemporary Arts and Crafts Biennial Exhibition at the China National Museum with the embroidery works “西施” (Xi Shi), “蓝鹊枇杷图” (Blue Magpies and Loquat Trees), and “米芾书法手卷·多景楼” (Calligraphy Handscroll by Mi Fu, Multiple Scenery Tower) jointly embroidered by Shao Xiaocheng and Xiao Lin.

2016:

Participated in the third China Contemporary Arts and Crafts Biennial Exhibition at the China National Museum with the Jingxiu Art Embroidery work “大千画.绿度母” (Great Thousand Realms Painting, Green Tara).

2018:

Participated in the fourth China Contemporary Arts and Crafts Biennial Exhibition at the China National Museum with the Jingji Embroidery work “锦绣年华” (Splendid Years), which was reserved and collected by the Chinese Arts and Crafts Museum.
